About Virginia
Creation casts a long and lasting shadow when the borders and boundaries of reality start to bulge and burst. Each tattoo is a collaborative journey, translating personal stories and unique visions into vibrant, enduring works of art.
A New York native, Virginia Elwood's journey into the world of tattooing began over two decades ago. As a multidisciplinary, openly queer artist, Virginia has carved a niche in the tattoo community by blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. Her tattoos draw inspiration from textiles and folk art, traditional Americana, folklore, fun, and a love of exploration, inviting all who encounter her work to explore a realm where reality is reimagined.
Virginia's creations are born from collaboration and mutual inspiration. This symbiotic relationship with her clients is a powerful driving force, propelling her to push the boundaries of what tattoo art can achieve.
Virginia Elwood’s work has garnered respect far and wide, gracing the pages of renowned publications such as The New York Times and Vogue. Her talents have also gained attention outside of tattooing, leading to collaborations with other visionaries both in and out of the field, including Zadig & Voltaire, The New York Historical Society, Ricco/Maresca, and Hobo Bags Artisan Series.
In her fine artwork, Virginia attempts to marry the simplicity of traditional tattoos with non-traditional subject matter and mediums. Her recent works explore the concept of the body as a landscape and the ways we protect and project ourselves. Using yarn and fibers made with acrylic paint, Virginia weaves and layers protective barriers and points of entry on painted canvas and porcelain hand sculptures.
From her early days apprenticing under renowned artists to co-owning Saved Tattoo in Brooklyn and establishing her own studio, Virginia's path reflects her dedication, creativity, and enduring passion for tattooing. She currently owns This Time Tmrw Lakeside, located an hour north of NYC in the woods of the Lower Hudson Valley, and occasionally at Flower World in Brooklyn.
